Understanding the Procedure of Giving CPR to a Patient

Anyone who experiences clotting forming up inside his blood vessels stands a big chance to fall victim to cardiac arrest. To help such a person come out of it, Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (or CPR) can come in a lot handy. The sooner this treatment is given to the sufferer, the more likely he will be able to come out of this condition. American Heart Association CPR Classes are intended to prepare people with techniques that can save the lives of their near ones or that of those who need it critically.

There is a specific procedure that has to be followed before working on this condition. Take a look at how it goes:

  • Recognition of Cardiac Arrest Situation: Check if the person is able to respond. See if he is breathing or not. Check for his pulse for about 10 seconds.

  • Activation of Emergency Response System: If you are trained to give CPR, start the procedure on the patient right away, while also calling for medical assistance. Else you must look for someone who can perform it. Until medics arrive.

  • Compression-Ventilation Ratio: Continuous compressions at the rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. Also give a breath after every 6 seconds.

  • Chest Recoil: You must allow the chest to fully recoil after every compression

  • Minimize Interruptions: Try not to give gaps longer than 10 seconds while giving compressions.
