I still remember the day after my meditation retreat. I got up early morning my meditation was good. I was happy about the relaxed state of my mind.But the day turned out quite tremulous. With lots of financial difficulties and some unexpected events that started really unnerving me. I was feeling uneasy and little stressed up by the unexpected events of the day. By evening my state of mind was little irritable so I decided to discuss the matter about financial issue with my wife. I started discussion expressing my concerns and fears about the situation and the solution which I could understand. But this really backfired as instead of understanding my view point my wife came up with her own solution. I really got upset and without talking to her went to bed. I started thinking what a day ? I started with such a nice meditation and ended in such a mess. Then I starting asking why my meditation practice does not hold in tough times. Is meditation enough for leading a fulfilled life. I knew meditation had given me a lot in past. I could calm my mind and enter into relaxed states of consciousness. It had changed my outlook of life from purely materialistic to more open and spiritually oriented. But something was still lacking and I could not understand what. May be I need to practice more or something need to change in my life. With this I started my quest . With some deeper study I started understanding Meditation alone is not the solution of present era. First thousands of spiritual masters and gurus who had meditated or devised brilliant meditation techniques with massive following had been implicated in many scandals.Flashes of recent news about Swami Nityanand, Swami Asaram controversy etc. started coming up. According to Kin Wilber, Terry Patten, A.H. Almaas etc.modern era requires spiritual practices to be integrated with psychotherapy work and understanding. We need to root our spirituality in deep understanding of modern psychotherapy. We need to work with our shadow self and refine it for our growth.Meditation may be helpful but may need support of some other methods to transform the shadow self. Rebirthing, inquiry, Big mind ,talking to sub personalities are some of the methods that can help us to work with the hidden subconscious impulses which is called shadow self. Shadow self includes anger, hurt, guilt, greed, passion, jealosy which we are not ready to accept as a part of us. it is repressed and then we start projecting it on other people.I use talking to my sup personalities to help me understand my shadow selfs. For example in the above case I started talking to my anger. It soon started telling me that it is acting so as it afraid of handling the financial crisis. so it was primarily fear presenting as anger. On talking with fear it turned out that there was deep sense of failure and inferiority. I started accepting all these subpersonalities as a part of my existence. Soon they became a part of my psyche well integrated and well accepted. there was a sense of peace ad self acceptance May be I can talk more about the method some time later.
