We all start with good intentions. We set goals, plan for it and hope that this year will be the year where we will make it happen! So eight weeks into the new year, how are you doing with your goals?
Think about your career, health, finance and relationship goals. Most of the time, we want the right things. But we don’t always get what we want because we take the wrong approach!
If you have been side-tracked by your day to day life or old habits, you are not alone. Here are the 3 biggest mistakes you are making with goal setting and how to fix them to make this your best year ever!
1. Lack of clarity – one of the biggest reasons people do not get what they want is because they do not REALLY know what they want. The people who have created an extraordinary quality of life have had incredible clarity with their vision. It’s important that you have a crystal clear vision of what you want to achieve, obtain and be in life. Without this, people, circumstances and experiences will pass you by and you’ll believe that you just weren’t lucky enough or that it’s just too hard – when in fact you just weren’t aware of the opportunities that were presented in front of you.
For example how many times have you heard people saying, I want to make more money. This is a very generic goal and you wouldn’t know that you have achieved it. Instead of saying I want to make more money, be specific. For example, I earn $20000 more this year than the last.
2. Don’t know their WHY – most people focus on what and how of goal setting and completely forget about ‘WHYs’ and that’s why you see people quitting on their goals as soon as going gets tough. When you work on challenging goals, you will face difficulties and resistance. But if you know WHY you are doing something, when the hard times, rejections and disappointments come and, trust me, they are going to come, your reasons will be your friends and will help you to fight out the tough times.
As Tony Robbins says, “reasons come first, answers come second”, when you know your reasons no matter what difficulties come your way, you will overcome them.
So before you get to the how to achieve a goal, take the time to identify why your goals are important to you.
Identify your reasons and put them in order of importance and make sure that you review them on a consistent basis.
3. Detail to Delay Syndrome – here is what I mean, often people spend so much time in planning that by the time they finish planning its already February and by the end of it, they have such a long list of things to do that they get overwhelmed and don’t even start working on their goals.
I recommend to my clients what I call Next Step Principle, that says that you do the first thing that needs to happen and then the next and then next and next……
Follow the Next Step Principle and you will have a friend in your corner called ‘Momentum’ that will keep you motivated and help make this your best year ever!
